Andy W. Knight

Professor Andy W. Knight, Professor and past Chair of International Relations in the University of Alberta Political Science Department, is a researcher, author, communicator, and teacher. He is the former Director of the Institute of International Relations (IIR), The University of the West Indies (UWI) in Trinidad & Tobago, and the co-founder and former head of the Diplomatic Academy of the Caribbean (DAOC).
Professor Knight was named by Venture Magazine among Alberta’s top 50 most influential people and, by the Black Business and Professional Association of Canada, as the Harry Jerome Trailblazer. Over the past 30 years, his research has focused on multilateral security, the United Nations, global governance, and issues of political violence including how to develop policy to counter such violence.
He has received several large grants from SSHRC, CIDA, IDRC, the UNU, CIIPS (and its offshoot) and the Worldwide Universities Network totalling over $6 million to study political violence, children and war, xeno-racism, and countering home-grown terrorism. In March 2021, Professor Knight was awarded the University of Alberta’s highest honour – the University of Alberta Distinguished Professor. Additionally, he was the 2021-22 Fulbright Distinguished Chair in International and Area Studies at Yale University.
