Geoffrey Maina

Dr. Geoffrey Maina is an Associate Professor at the Prince Albert Campus of the University of Saskatchewan (USask) College of Nursing. He earned his doctoral degree from the University of Alberta, where he developed a strong passion for mental health and addictions education and therapeutic interventions. Upon obtaining his nursing license, he gained valuable experience working in a psychogeriatric hospital. This experience has been foundational to his teaching career at USask, where he focuses on mental health, addiction and therapeutic interventions for individuals and groups.

Dr. Maina’s research is centred on HIV prevention and care where he emphasizes harm reduction, stigma reduction, and peer interventions. He is dedicated to improving outcomes for clients and families affected by addiction and promoting immigrant health. In addition to his teaching and research, Dr. Maina is actively engaged in community-based research on substance use and addiction in Prince Albert. He is developing research aimed at improving clinical outcomes for clients on opiate replacement therapy. Recently, he received funding from the Canadian Research Initiative in Substance Misuse (CRISM) to organize a knowledge exchange forum with community leaders, service providers, stakeholders, and Elders to address addiction in the Prince Albert Parkland Health Region.
