Keisha Jefferies

Dr. Keisha Jefferies is an African Nova Scotian nurse scientist, an Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing, and a Dalhousie University Research Chair. She is the co-founder of the Community of Black Students in Nursing at Dalhousie University, a peer mentorship group, and the director of M-BRACe (Multidisciplinary Black Research and Advocacy Centre) a research hub that supports the future generation of critical nurse leaders. She has clinical experience in neonatal intensive care and breastfeeding support. Her research examines the leadership experiences of African Nova Scotian nurses and the implications for nursing practice and education. Her work is funded by several awards such as Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships, Killam Trust, and Research Nova Scotia.
Her scholarly and advocacy work focus on addressing anti-Black racism in nursing, equitable admissions in postsecondary institutions and social justice at large. Dr. Jefferies’ research interests include Black population health, nursing leadership, and examining anti-Black racism in nursing education and practice. She possesses expertise in the areas of health policy, qualitative research, and evidence syntheses. Dr. Jefferies is also looking at other critical factors through her research, such as community mistrust, mental health, and the role of nursing education in perpetuating the underrepresentation of African Nova Scotians in nursing.
