Dr. Lucy Karanja is the Research Coordinator for the Transforming the Lives of Black Children and Youth in Canada project. With a PhD in Educational Studies from Western University, Dr. Karanja is an accomplished and dedicated educator and research professional who has devoted her career to teaching and mentoring students in different post-secondary contexts in Canada. She has also been an active participant in her community working with immigrant high school youths to promote their academic and social adaptation and integration in Canada.

As a Research Coordinator, Dr. Karanja’s work is informed by knowledge from her research work on understanding the transmigration experiences and challenges of African refugees and immigrants in Africa and Canada. She has investigated the educational and socio-economic integration challenges of refugee youths in African and Canadian contexts. More recently, Dr. Karanja’s research engagements have focused on understanding the broader settlement challenges facing African immigrant populations, including access to healthcare, and stressors that negatively impact their settlement, integration and well-being in Canada.

Dr. Karanja is a qualitative researcher with expertise in research approaches such as ethnography, action research, and participatory action research (PAR). Her research has utilized critical theories, postcolonial theories, intersectionality and transnationalism.

Transforming Black Lives was founded with the mission to transform the lives of Black children and youths in Canada. With a history rooted in advocacy and community engagement, we have continuously worked to address systemic issues affecting Black communities.
