Temitope B. Oriola

Professor Temitope B. Oriola is an internationally recognized scholar in the field of criminology and terrorism studies, professor of criminology and sociology and Associate Dean in the Faculty of Arts, University of Alberta. He is also author of Criminal Resistance? The Politics of Kidnapping Oil Workers, one of a small number of book-length sociological investigations of political kidnapping in the English language. Oriola is president-elect of the Canadian Sociological Association (CSA) and served as special adviser to the Government of Alberta’s Police Act Review and produced recommendations that were passed into law through The Police Amendment Act, 2022. Oriola’s research encompasses police use of force, resource insurgencies and terrorism studies. He is a recipient of the Governor General of Canada’s Academic Gold Medal, CAFA Distinguished Academic Award, two-time Carnegie fellow, 2020 Kathleen W. Klawe Prize for teaching excellence and 2022 research excellence award, Faculty of Arts, University of Alberta. Oriola’s research has garnered national and international recognition as well as awards from community-based organizations. His expert perspective has been engaged by think tanks and/or media organizations in countries such as Australia, the USA, Canada, Nigeria, Senegal, South Korea, and China.
